First, thanks a_cunning_gnome for pointing out the web link for the reduced price Windows 7. Being an old man returning to college has turned out to be more expensive than I initialy anticipated, this save me some much needed money.

Now that I've check out the program and found my school does qualify, I don't know which version to choose. I am, of course, going to use the computer the new OS is on for EQ but also for some home entertainment, kids movies, music (porno after the wife goes to work/bed), but also for school related stuff, word processing (MS Office Word), and hte occasional presentation.

So, if I get Professional, does it have ALOT more stuff that I don't need that'll take up space and resources, and go with Home Premium? Or is Pro easily managable on a decent home PC and should go with that version for the extra stuff I *might* use?

Oh yea, definately going for 64bit.

Input is appreciated guy.

Thanks- BB

Terrific, thats the kind of info I needed to see. Something official and some personal input. Going to get Pro.

Thanks again-

One trend you'll notice with the different windows versions starting with XP is that the "home" versions are stripped of various functionality that Microsoft deems most users won't need / want. For example, in windows XP, the home versions don't include the taskkill command line application. While many of you won't see it as an important thing at first, think back to having 1000 internet explorer instances running because your popup blocker failed to stop it. With taskkill you can shutdown EVERY instance of iexplore.exe all in one simple command. taskkill /f /im iexplore.exe. My point is that Microsoft is usually correct in that most users won't need various functionality, they just want to be able to surf the web, download a few cheesy card games and watch the newest hot TV series DVD. For those users it works great, and for the rest of us that actually use our computer for a large variety of things, the pro versions suite us.

Glad I knew about it to let you know. I just finished finals--This weekend I'll probably be downloading 7 64bit finally from this site and seeing if the xp64 to 7-64 upgade works. I've heard it works amazingly well.

Generally the only disadvantage to 64 bit OSes is you'll run into software incompatibilities sometimes... but it's less and less common as people start designing for new OSes. It's def. faster.

Let me know how it goes and if you do an upgrade or if you're allowed to do a clean install.

the only time you have 64 bit driver issues are when you use old hardware. A few development apps don't have a x64 version but for the normal person everything should work fine.

I have more issues getting Win7 drivers in general then I do for x64. Yes I know you can use Vista drivers and just run compatibility mode but it that still doesn't fully install some of my printer software.

That was the fastest and most painless OS instalation I've ever done.

DLed the ISO and used- http://store.microsoft.com/Help/ISO-Tool to burn to a bootable DVD. I did a clean install from Vista and it was nice. Can't wait to play with it now.

Thanks all-

BB

On the 64bit Win7 conversation, I have been running x64 since the initial beta release, and have been through the RC upgrades also (currently at 7100 on my media center). I have had no driver issues, and it seems like all of my hardware is picked up through the new(er) updated Microsoft Update Driver Library.

Overall I am quite impressed with 7.

My biggest bitch with Win7 is its WMC not updating the PS3 when new media files are added.

I don't run any extenders, so I haven't messed with that at all. I have a friend who extends with an Xbox360 and doesn't have any update problems, so it might be an issue to be fixed on the PS3 client side?

PS3 doesnt work as an extender like the 360, PS3 updates fine from a vista machine but with Win7 it doesnt sync correctly. From the googling I have done its a M$ issue.

looking for link to download ISO win7 ultimate if any has 1 thanx

Not sure if it's windows 7 in general, but win 7x64 pro has a few things about EQ I don't like. 1) I have to right click and run as administrator every time, even though I've checked run as admin under the file properties. 2) Whenever a UAC prompt pops up (only on UAC lvl 3... without screen dim it's fine), it freezes everquest completely for 10-15 seconds (I have a fast machine too).
