Hey guys, my laptop crashed last night and now even after several reboots, it won't recognize anything coming in thru the USB ports. No mouse or keypad. Can only use the actual laptop keypad and mouse which is a PITA.

Any suggestions as to how to get the USB ports working again?

Have you tried doing a System Restore?

Otherwise you can look in device manager to see if there are any errors with your USB adapters then try uninstalling them and rebooting to see if windows reinstalls them properly. Sounds like your drivers might have got a bit corrupted during the crash.

usb driver

Thanks Riot. Tried uninstalling & rebooting. That did not work. There's a little yellow circle next to several of the items under the Device Manager.

There's an error message: Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device.

Seems it's not seeing those items.

Will a system restore delete all data & loaded software?

Kinda. It'll show a date on the restores and just pick the one earliest to the time that it crashed. You'll lose whatever you put on the computer between that time and today so it really depends on how often your restore points were being made. They're usually made automatically whenever you uninstall something or change something important.

So you uninstalled the drivers, rebooted and then when the computer booted up, it failed to reinstall the drivers, right? The little balloon should have popped up in lower right side of the screen saying 'found new devices'.

If you right click on one of the devices with the yellow icon in device manager and select properties then driver you should see something like 'Update Driver'. If you click on that it should search the internet for a new driver and update it if needed/if it is found. Otherwise you can see if 'Roll Back Driver' is available. If update doesn't work then try roll back driver if it is available.

This is from Microsoft.

Code 41
Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)
Recommended resolution

This problem occurs if you install a driver for a non-Plug and Play device, but Windows cannot find the device. Here are some things that you can try to resolve this problem.

If the Troubleshooting Wizard does not resolve the problem, do one of the following:
If the device was removed, uninstall the driver, connect the device, and then click Scan for hardware changes to reinstall the driver.
If the hardware was not removed, the driver files might be obsolete. In this case, update the driver from Device Manager. In the device Properties dialog box, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver to start the Hardware Update Wizard. Follow the instructions to update the driver.
If the device is a non-Plug and Play device, you may have to install a newer version of the driver. To install non-Plug and Play devices, use the Add Hardware wizard. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type hdwwiz.cpl.

Here's another spot with some possible fixes.

When you load into bios can you see any of the USB there?
