I have an AMD FX-8350 that's starting to go tango uniform after only 4 years of service so I'm thinking of replacing it and wouldn't mind getting some feedback from anyone who has purchased parts recently.

I'm thinking:

CPU: intel i7-6700k Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0 GHz LGA 1151 91W BX80662I76700K Processor - Newegg.com

Cooler : Be quiet! DARK ROCK PRO 3 Air Cooling .. no water be quiet! DARK ROCK PRO 3 Silentwings CPU Cooler 250W TDP - Newegg.com

Motherboard : This is where I'm having troubles. Would like to be in the $100 - $150 range. Last MB was Gigabyte and its failing so gun shy. Lot of negative reviews about DOA parts from both MSI and ASUS. Considered trying ASRock.

Ram : Will get 16 GB of DDR4 - haven't picked anything yet.

Initially will use current PSU ( just replaced while trouble shooting MB issue ) case, drives, etc.

Anyone do a recent build with high end i7's ?

well i went with Intel Core i7-5930K Haswell-E 6-Core 3.5 GHz LGA 2011-v3 140W BX80648I75930K Desktop Processor as the new 1's all start putting video built into the processor.. i dont want extra things to heat it up.. and 6 cores is just real nice. and at 580.. not a bad price. mb was a simple choice for long life.. ASUS SABERTOOTH X99 LGA 2011-v3 Intel X99 .. running HyperX FURY 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 2133 (PC4 17000) memory.. all that with ASUS Radeon R9 390 DirectX 12 STRIX-R9390-DC3OC-8GD5-GAMING 8GB 512-Bit GDDR5.. i have not found a limit to what the system can do yet..

Strongly suggest adding a m.2 or u.2 ssd if you go with 6700k socket mb, make sure it has m.2 or u.2 slot, performance gain is substantial over sata3.

If you gotta spend an extra 50 on the mb for a m.2 or u.2 slot its worth it imo.

I went supper cheap and picked up a replacement motherboard from a local shop for about $50. Seems to have fixed my PC BSOD's so the upgrade is put on hold.

FYI - My PC is an AMD FX-8350 which is a 125 W CPU and my motherboard's voltage regulation module seems to have been running really hot and started to get flaky. Took way longer than it should have for me to figure out the root cause.

Just noticed the 6700k is $290 at Microcenter, a good deal if you don't have Microcenter in your state.
