Who was the greatest captain of the Enterprise?

By that thinking you missed William T. Riker taking over as captain a few times and a few times some others, One such one was when Picard was taken and transformed into Locutus. Beverly Crusher was even in command once if I remember correctly.

Personally though a big fan of TNG, Enterprise became a strong tie for me. It would be between Picard and Archer for me.

Beverly's command though wasn't as "captain" . She just "had the bridge" while everyone else beamed down for the Borg/Lor/Data problem. It would be like when Troi "had the bridge" while everyone else went to bed.

I never did quite get that though.
I think it was the season 7 finale/premier.

"Hey. We are chasing Data into a Borg infested territory. Lets send our captain, first officer, chief engineer, head of security, and ship's counselor."
"Isn't that the entire senior staff?"
"No. We still have a ship doctor. They can protect the ship from attackers."
"Ok. Sounds like a plan!"

Reminds me of a longish comedy routine that, at one point, had Kirk saying something to the effect of:
"There is a terrible danger down there on that planet. What we're going to do is beam down everyone that's important on this show. And Ensign Smith."
I laughed my ass off, because it was such an apt description of what happened just about every episode - there was always an "Ensign Smith" to get eaten, mauled, shot, or whatever, basically cannon fodder.

As a side note, this was spoofed (along with a lot of stuff) in "Galaxy Quest" by Guy (Crewman #6 from one episode).

Janeway, and Sisko were never captain of the Enterprise, as the thread is titled. That's why I didn't list them in my list. Probably why they aren't in the poll either.

Beverly did become a Capitan though of some medical ship when riker became some admiral or something in the future and data got that weird white slash through his hair in the episodes were picard was poping back and forth through time.
