Bernie Mac dead at 50

Truly a loss -- he wasn't the best standup around, but his style always put a smile on my face for a long time, and that's more than most people will ever be able to do.

Suprisingly, lots of people. Especially the young, elderly, and immune-compromised. He also had sarcoidosis, a disease which creates cysts in the lungs. Poor Bernie

It is indeed a great loss. I always enjoyed his sense of humor.

Actually a hospital is the worst place to be when you have pneumonia

A lot of people get pneumonia when they're IN the hospital.

Isn't that because they are not very active? always in bed or mostly in bed in a cool climate?

It's because of nosocomial infections. There are lots of "bugs" in hospitals, and plenty of ways to enter the lungs (e.g., breathing tube). So the combination of sick person + exposure to infectious agents + vehicle of entry = increased risk for pneumonia.

That's not how you get pneumonia.

The most common cause of people getting pneumonia in the hospital is their kidneys shutting down and fluid entering their lungs (which is what pneumonia is). Usually it's a balancing act between trying to keep the liquid out of your lungs and whatever medication they're giving at the moment. Especially in old people -- it almost like a "rob Peter to pay Paul" kind of thing.

And why does this happen more in hospitals? Because you spend most of your time on your back, where the fluid pools and collects in your lungs.

Heh, getting off topic (sorry), but what you're describing is pulmonary edema. Pneumonia requires a microbiologic etiology. But yes, stasis and edema can complicate pneumonia.
