Movie - Sicko!!

Quote:
Sicko (or SiCKO) is a 2007 documentary film by American filmmaker Michael Moore that investigates the American health care system, focusing on its health insurance and pharmaceutical industry. The film compares the for-profit, non-universal U.S. system with the non-profit Universal Health Care systems of Canada, the United Kingdom, France and Cuba.

Sicko opened to positive reviews, but also generated criticism and controversy. Some policy specialists have praised the film while others have criticized the film for its positive portrayal of the publicly funded health systems of Canada, the United Kingdom and Cuba, and for its negative portrayal of the health care system in the United States.

Not sure everyone's seen this movie or this was discussed on the boards before - but all I have to say is WOW!!

I feel this "movie" is a MUST SEE - it really has opened my eyes to how messed up we really are in America (Fry, we are all moving to Australia).

I for one lost both of my parents early in life - We grew up in a small town and lived in a half-of-double. My father worked in a factory all his life and my mother did not work until I was the age of 12 (Three brothers and one sister). We did not have the best health care with my father working in a factory. I recalled my mother not being able to have the money to help her in the medicine she needed to fully recover.

Just curious to how others feel about this and http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-bin/bdquery/z?d110:HR676:

Thanks,

Stoneface

The movie is pretty one sided. While America is fucked up this movie over dramatizes a lot of aspects. Michael Moore was looking for good reviews not the truth.

Thats just my opinion of this crap ass documentary.

Have to agree with JJ here.

Michael Moore is nothing more than a lib hack. Sure our system has its problems, but if you look at socialized medicien in other countrys really good your going to find that what we have here is sooooooo much better than what they have else where. The bit about Quba having better health care than the US is laughable at best.

Youtube report's from 20/20 (overview, and then parts 1-6):

I have to parallel the other sentiments here. I watched Sicko, and I actually thought it was very well done...I think it was heavily skewed as per the typical Moore film. I did think it was entertaining, and I thought it had some great points. The American health care system has some major flaws in it.

I'm not a big fan of the insurance companies...the for profit, we're trying to make as much money off you as possible before you die insurance companies...having so much control over my health care.

Not that the government would be any better. All it takes however is one look at Worker's Comp for anyone that's ever had to go through that mess to realize you don't want the government taking care of your health care either.

So I like to think I can see both sides of the argument and I agree with points on both sides...this film definitely leans more towards the sensational because that's what sells. It's still fun to watch, and it is good for making you think about the issue.

I found this very funny having owned a business before. Try filing for workers comp in any other country in the world, it doesn't exist. We are so freaking spoiled here and have everything at our fingertips. Our pets receieve better medical treatment than 95% of the humans in this world.

I hate Michael Moore... even more than I hate Al Gore and his bullshit global warming bit (names rhyme, coincidence?). I haven't seen this movie, or any other one he's done since bowling for columbine. Probably never will. I don't want my money going to that ass.

You normally don't see me responding to threads like this, but I am pretty passionate about this topic and want to see friends and family in the US have better healthcare than they do.

Since I've had the benefit of using the US health system and the Australian/New Zealand systems, I think I may be able to shed some light on this subject.

I beg to differ on this point. Find me a some information that shows the US health care is better than anywhere else in the world? It is not true. They may have one of the most advanced, or the best looking hospitals, but in terms of care it isn't. Many people suffer in the US because they can't afford the hospital bills.

I love this socialized medicine debate. You guys should abolish veteran health care, because thats just socialized medicine too and those veterans are just getting a free ride from your socialist policy's!

I live in a country where health care is free. Sure it's not perfect, but I'm not going to be forced to work a job I hate because I need the health care from it and I'm not going to put off an operation because I can't afford it, also some share holders are not going to profit from my misfortune.

Believe it or not but workers comp exists in other places in the world not just the US.

I will agree Moores documentary is very bias and doesn't give all the facts. But you guys need to put down your rosy colored glasses. I know people putting off operations in the US because they can't afford it. This should not be happening in any health care system. In terms of caring for those that can't afford it, the US is many years behind most other modern country's. Everybody has a right to health care and it is therefore logical for the government to set down minimum standards of care available to all.

I'm not saying that the US health care dosen't have its problems... It does, huge ones in fact. but there are many ways that this can be fixed rather then soicaling health care. What I mean by best healthcare is not having to wait for months for simple tests or life saving type care or drugs. Women from Canada come to the US almost every day to give birth to there kids cause there own hospitals don't have room for them. People in the UK pull there own teeth, etc, etc.. as for people suffering in the US because they can't afford the hospital bills? NO ONE.. and I repete NO ONE can be turned away even if they have no money to pay with from getting health care in the US. It may not be the top of the line care that people who can pay may get but its not as bad as it sounds. Sure there are cases of people being dumped in the street here and there but its not common place. Most people that can't pay get the care they need for free.

This I agree with 100% it is socialized and most of it sucks. Our vets should have the very best care we are able to give them and there not getting it.

Some of the articals I linked to have other ways to fix health care in the US btw, some are good. I like the idea of health savings accounts myself.
