Working on a Light Novel
Hey guys,
I have been working with one of my old ideas for a story that is aimed towards readers in the young teens to young twenties group (basically the type of people who are big on, anime and manga)... I have just finished the rough draft of the first section and I have the whole series outlined... Originally I intended to release each section on my own website for free to read in hopes of acquiring a fan base and some popularity through world of mouth... But my friends who are reading it over and giving me valuable input have said that I should wait until the series is done and try to get it published as a novel or two... I know this is odd asking this on these forums, but the members here are usually well spoken individuals with respectable opinions... What do you guys think I should consider doing? And thanks in advance for any advice / input you guys can give to me! ![]()

Heh, speaking as someone whos dad is a publisher...
Even with selective writing like that you will have to sell yourself and the book to a publishing company to get it out to the masses. It takes a lot of time and sometimes a lot of money to even get anywhere with it to begin with to sell it at all. That and if you aren't already an established author, you may only get a niche crowd. Web is free. Going through publishing isn't easy nor is it cheap and you'll be asked to make lots of changes to make it "sellable" and "marketable" if you aren't an established author. Just things to be aware of. If it's graphical, start with the web. If it's literally just a book, I wish you luck.

Being close to 24 and working in the business world I sort of figured that there would be many trials to overcome if I did take this seriously and see it all the way through... I have been writing down storyline ideas for years and have 3 main ones I am working on, but I am focusing on the one in particular as my main project... I have a job where it isn't very busy at all and I can bring in my laptop to keep me occupied, so I've been writing the story on the laptop (the outline is of course on paper, it's just faster to type out the full story on the laptop)... So I guess I don't have much to lose right now by putting a majority of my effort into it... I'm not looking for fame or fortune, just a way to deliver my over active imagination in a form for others to enjoy. ![]()

Well, you could actually do a mixture of both. I read a lot of web comics that all started out as free readers and are still that way today but they do have merchandise as well as hard copies of the said comics. Another example is the Eragon series. The author occassionally puts up a few tidbits of a couple chapters for his readers to check out yet he still sells the books like mad. Honestly, I would encourage you to do both. Good Luck!
