hairpin is an unknown quantity at this point
I had this same problem in Vista on my Toshiba laptop. To fix it I did the following:

Right click any free space on the desktop and select "Personalize"

Click "Screen Saver", then select the "Change Power Settings" link at the bottom.

Under the performance level selected, click the "Change Plan Settings" link.

Click "Change advanced power settings" at the bottom.

From the menu, expand "Processor power management" by clicking the + sign next to it.

Under "Minimum processor state" change "On Battery" and "Plugged in" to 100%

Do the same for "Maximum processor state".

The problem is caused by Vista detecting that your CPU usage is low and it assumes you're not doing anything at the computer and goes into power saving mode, regardless of what you have it set for in your power profile.

Changing this setting to 100% will prevent it from sleeping

Just curious... did you try shutting the computer down via command prompt without video after the problem occurred (since you were able to reproduce it)?

My money is still on the ATI video card regardless of what others say. If you have another, you might try an even swap for a few days and see what happens.

I know it is always easier just to replace a broken box, but it would still be interesting to know the problem and solution in case any of us have a similar problem. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

in regards to hooking up your old hard drive just get an ide or sata depending on your drive type (some adapter cables come with both) usb adapter can plug it into old hard drive and either use it as an external or copy it over to new one i think rockfish makes one. prob have to change your drive to either slave or master cant remember off hand before you hook it up so it will read it then just looko under disk managment and it should be there.

Loading the 2nd HDD was the easiest thing I've ever done. The main boot drive was SATA, which left 2 IDE slots on the motherboard... one went to the DVD/CD Rom drive, and the other was empty, so I just stuck the old HDD into the case and plugged it into the empty IDE slot with the cable from the old computer. I checked the settings to make sure the 1st SATA drive was loading first, and then finished the boot. Everything loaded up well, the drive was recognized, and all is still well in the world.

I was able to copy and paste over my entire EQ folder in about 5 minutes or so, copying over any files that were downloaded/installed earlier and adding all the hotkey/UI/etc files that I had customized.

Basically, this was the best-case scenario for what I had hoped would happen. I couldn't be happier.

If you guys aren't in the mood to build a comp from scratch, I suggest checking out www.cyberpowerpc.com ... this is the 2nd box I've bought from them and I'm very very happy.
